The story of Melannie
Two Roman saints, Melania the Elder and her granddaughter Melania the Younger, carried the name into Christian Europe, and it reached English through French Melanie. Its modern American life owes a great deal to Gone with the Wind, whose Melanie Hamilton kept the name in circulation from 1936. The double-n spelling is a later and quite specific move: English has a productive family of affectionate girls' names ending in -nnie, and reshaping an unfamiliar name toward a familiar pattern is one of the oldest things speakers do to words. Melannie is most common in Spanish-speaking American families, where the reshaping also helps mark the ending as -ee rather than the Spanish -ee-eh, and its best year on record is 2002.
Meaning
black, dark
Greek melaina, the feminine of melas, black. It is the same root as melanin and melancholy, the latter from black bile. The Latin saints' name Melania preserves it directly, and the doubled n of this spelling is an English addition with no bearing on the meaning.

Three syllables, stress on the first. The doubled n changes nothing in English; in Spanish it helps signal that the final syllable is -nee rather than -nee-eh.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
