The story of Svetlana
Alexander Vostokov used Svetlana in a poem in 1802; Vasily Zhukovsky used it as the title and heroine of a ballad published in 1813, an adaptation of Burger's Lenore transposed to a Russian setting with a happy ending. The ballad was enormously popular and the name entered general use from it. Because it was not a saint's name, the Orthodox Church would not baptize with it for a long time, and women were often christened Fotina or Photina — the Greek for light — and called Svetlana. It became one of the most common Soviet-era names.
Meaning
light; bright
Slavic svet means light and also, in Russian, the world — the same word does both jobs, which is a genuine feature of the language. Svetly means bright or luminous. Svetlana was formed from it with a name-ending on the model of the older Slavic dithematic names, so it looks traditional and is not. The derivation is settled because the coinage is documented.

The Shelena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Svetlana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shelena climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shelena's path sketches the road Svetlana is walking now.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single word and completely transparent to Slavic speakers.
- Sveta and Lana are both usable short forms, and Lana is a complete name.
- Its origin is documented down to the author and the year, which is very rare.
- The initial sv cluster is difficult for English speakers.
- Three syllables plus an unfamiliar opening makes it slow to give over the phone.
- It is strongly associated with the Soviet period in Russian ears.
