The story of Doria
The Doria were among the most powerful families of medieval and Renaissance Genoa. Andrea Doria, born in 1466, commanded fleets for France and then for the Emperor, restored the Genoese republic in 1528 and dominated it until his death at ninety-two; the ocean liner named for him sank off Nantucket in 1956 in one of the best-known maritime disasters of the century. The name has also been used as a feminine of Dorian and as an Italian given name in its own right. American records show it in modest numbers, peaking in 1909 with the Italian arrival of that period.
Meaningscholars disagree
possibly 'of the Dorians'; the Genoese surname is separate
Two routes. The Greek Dorian names the Doric-speaking people of the ancient Peloponnese, whose own name is generally connected to a word for a gift or to a region called Doris; neither is settled. The Genoese surname Doria descends from d'Oria, of Oria — a family name recorded from the twelfth century, unconnected to the Greek. A modern given name spelled this way may draw on either or on neither.
