The story of Fanny
Francis of Assisi was baptized John and nicknamed Francesco by a father who traded in France; the nickname became one of the most-given names in Europe. Frances is its English feminine, and Fanny was the ordinary affectionate form from the seventeenth century, so common that it appears as a heroine's name in eighteenth and nineteenth-century novels without comment. It stood in the American top two hundred in the 1880s and left use in the twentieth century as its slang senses hardened.
Meaning
Frenchman, free one
From the Latin Franciscus, 'Frenchman'. The Franks who gave France its name were called after a word meaning free — the root of the English 'frank' and 'franchise' — so the name reaches a second sense one step further back.

The trade-off
- Frances stands behind it with five centuries of English use and a saint at the root.
- It has a deep literary record, which is unusual for a pet form.
- Fran is available and carries no baggage at all.
- The word is vulgar slang in British and Australian English and mildly so in American, and this is now its dominant sense.
- That is the reason the name effectively left use, and it is not going to reverse.
