The story of Darian
Darius I built the Persian royal road and the palace at Persepolis, and the name survived in Greek and Latin sources. Its modern American life is twentieth-century and largely as a surname-shaped given name: Darian appears for both sexes from the 1960s, rose alongside Darren and Dorian, and peaked for girls in the mid-1990s.

possessing goodness
Usually read through Darius, from the Old Persian Darayavaush — dāraya, 'to hold', and vahu, 'good'. The name of three Achaemenid kings. A separate route reads it from the Darién region of Panama, whose name is indigenous American. Neither can be ruled out for a modern bearer.

The Ruthie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Darian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ruthie climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ruthie's path sketches the road Darian is walking now.
Darian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
