Where it comes from

The story of Marvel

English abstract nouns became American given names in two distinct waves, and the nineteenth-century one was much softer than the Puritan one before it: Marvel, Pearl, Verna, Vesta and Bertha all belong to the same period and the same taste. Marvel appears in American records from the 1880s, peaks in 1899 and declines through the 1920s, and it was used for both sexes with a strong female preference. Everything that has happened to the word since, from a comics imprint founded in 1939 to a film franchise from 2008, arrived long after the name had effectively left American use.

Meaning

a wonder, a thing to be wondered at

From Old French merveille, from Latin mirabilia, wonderful things, the neuter plural of mirabilis, from mirari, to wonder at. The same root gives miracle, admire, mirror and the star name Mira. English took the noun first and made a verb from it later, which is the reverse of the usual direction.

Marvel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1929, with 171 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning through a word everyone already knows.
  • Genuinely period-authentic to the 1890s rather than a modern revival.
  • Impossible to mispronounce or misspell.
What to consider
  • The comics and film brand is now the overwhelming association.
  • It is an ordinary English noun and verb.
  • It was used for both sexes, which the spelling does nothing to settle.
