The story of Mariko
A small set of names happens to exist independently in Japanese and in European languages, and the coincidences are complete. Naomi is Hebrew for pleasant and a common Japanese name written with characters read nao and mi. Erika is Germanic and also Japanese. Anna, Mari, Rina, Emi, Ken, Joe and Rio all work in both. Mariko sits at the edge of this group: Japanese speakers hear mari plus the female ending ko, and English speakers hear Maria with something added. Neither is wrong about their own language. The collisions arise because Japanese has a small syllable inventory built from simple consonant-vowel pairs, which is also the shape that European names tend to have when they are short, so the two systems keep landing on the same strings by accident.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Mariko is a Japanese name whose meaning depends on the characters used, which American records do not preserve. The final ko is written with the character for child and marks the name as female; the mari element can be written with characters for truth, for a village, for jasmine or for a ball, among others. The resemblance to European Maria is a coincidence. The American peak is 1984.

The Toniann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mariko's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Toniann climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Toniann's path sketches the road Mariko is walking now.
Mariko sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
