Toniann
Feminine · “Unknown”
Toniann joins two short forms, and behind the first of them is a name that acquired a letter by mistake. Anthony is spelled with a th because Renaissance scholars thought it came from a Greek word for a flower. It did not, and the h has been there ever since.

The story of Toniann
The h in Anthony is a scholar's error that stuck. Antonius has no aspirate anywhere in its history, but sixteenth-century writers, working in a period that treated Greek as the source of everything, connected it to anthos, the Greek word for a flower, and started writing the name with a th. English kept the spelling and eventually started saying it as well, which is why English speakers say Anthony and Italians say Antonio. The women's forms came out of the same root, and the short form Toni went its own way in the twentieth century. One bearer chose it deliberately: the novelist born Chloe Wofford took the name Anthony at her baptism when she was twelve, and the shortening of it became the name on all her books.

Unknown, plus grace
Antonius was a Roman clan name and nobody knows what it meant; the Romans themselves seem not to have known, and every meaning printed for it is a later guess. Ann is the French and English form of Hannah, from a Hebrew word about favor or grace, and that half is secure. So the name is half a mystery and half a blessing, which is more honest than most compound names manage.

Fashion outlook
Toniann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are completely familiar, so the name is understood the instant it is said.
- Toni and Annie are two ready-made everyday forms with nothing in common.
- Written as one word it works as a single name and does not need a hyphen.
- Compound names of this shape are firmly dated to the middle of the last century in American ears.
- Toni-Ann, Tonianne and Toni Ann are all in use, so the written form has to be specified every time.
- Neither half is a full name, so there is no formal version underneath for adult life.
