Margaret was among the commonest women's names in England for six hundred years and produced an enormous number of variants: Margery, Marjorie, Marget, Meg, Peg, Maggie, Madge. Marjorie was the Scottish and northern English favorite, and it carried its own short forms with it. Margie was written down as a legal name in nineteenth and early twentieth-century America, standing in the national top hundred through the 1930s.
