Inez is the Spanish form of an old name that English already had and largely abandoned. Rather than reviving its own version, the English-speaking world imported the Spanish one and used it for decades — which is an unusual thing for a language to do with a name it has owned since the Middle Ages.

The story of Inez
The Portuguese form belongs to one of the strangest stories in European royal history. Inês de Castro was a Galician noblewoman at the Portuguese court and the lover of the heir to the throne; the king had her killed in 1355 to end the entanglement and protect the succession. When the heir became king he declared that he had married her secretly years before, that she had therefore been his lawful wife, and that she was to be treated as a queen — and he had her body moved to the abbey at Alcobaça and buried in a royal tomb facing his own, so that the two would rise looking at each other. Later chroniclers added the scene everyone remembers, in which the court is made to kiss the dead woman's hand. That part is legend. The tombs are real, and they are still there.
Meaning
pure, chaste
The Greek root means pure or holy, and it produced a name carried by a Roman girl martyred young, whose cult spread across Europe and made the name one of the commonest in medieval Christendom. Spanish reshaped it into Inés, moving the stress and losing the g, and Portuguese did the same. The derivation is agreed. This spelling is the Spanish name with the accent dropped and the s written as a z, which is what English does to Spanish names it borrows.
How the name formed
- A Greek word for pure gives the name of a Roman martyr
- The name becomes one of the commonest in medieval Europe
- Spanish and Portuguese reshape it as Inés and Inês
- 1355: Inês de Castro is killed, and later declared queen
- English borrows the Spanish form and writes it Inez

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Short, striking and completely established across the Spanish-speaking world
- A documented medieval history and a memorable one, easily told to a child
- The final Z gives the name a definite ending that carries well
- Two pronunciations are in circulation and both are correct, so introductions have to settle it.
- The Spanish spelling with an accent is commoner internationally and will be written by many people.
- This spelling is recorded for sons as well as daughters in American records, though the great majority are daughters.
