Layne
Feminine · Old English roots · “lane”
Layne is given to both — 5,679 girls and 14,355 boys since 1880. See Layne as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Layne began as a place before it was a person: the Old English *lanu*, a narrow way running between hedges and fields. Families who lived along one were named for it, and in time the surname walked back across the line into first names, picking up a y along the way. It is one syllable, ends clean, and reads the same at any age.

The story of Layne
The word came first: Old English *lanu*, a strip of ground between hedgerows too narrow for a road. By the Middle Ages it had become a surname for the people who lived along one, and Lane spread widely through England and then into America. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century American parents were fond of turning English surnames into given names, and Lane made that crossing along with Wade, Blake and Cole. Layne is the y-spelling of that same name, formed on the model of surnames like Payne and Wayne, and it has held a place on American birth records for more than a century.
Meaning
lane; a narrow road or path
Layne is a spelling variant of the English surname Lane, which comes from Old English lanu, a narrow way. The y adds nothing to the meaning — it follows the pattern already familiar from Payne, Wayne and Dayne.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Layne went to 156 girls in 2025, but Laine, Lainee and Laynee are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 553, which makes it the 488th most-given girls’ name of the year — 908 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,906 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,303 for Layne itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Danyelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Layne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Danyelle climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Danyelle's path sketches the road Layne is walking now.
Layne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Layne is headed
Layne should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- One syllable and phonetically obvious: almost no one will mispronounce it, in any American accent.
- The sound is already familiar through Lane, Wayne and Blake, so it lands as recognizable rather than invented.
- Works unchanged for a boy or a girl, with no separate feminine or masculine form to choose between.
- Over a century of unbroken use on American birth records, without ever becoming a name a class has three of.
- The default spelling is Lane. Expect forms, teachers and coffee cups to drop the y, and expect to spell it aloud fairly often for life.
- Most children given this spelling are boys. A girl named Layne will be in a real but smaller group, and paperwork that guesses gender from a name will sometimes guess wrong.
- At one syllable it offers little to shorten. Families who like a pool of nicknames may find this one stays exactly as given — which is also, for many, the appeal.
