The story of Laine
Laine begins in more than one place. In English it is the surname Lane — from the Old English lanu, a narrow way between houses or fields — given the extra -i- that older clerks and printers scattered freely; families carried it to America as a last name long before anyone thought to use it first. The same four letters also arrive by a shorter road, as a clipping of Elaine, the Arthurian name that Tennyson pushed back into wide use with his Idylls of the King in the nineteenth century. And in Estonia, Laine stands on its own as a woman's name, from the Estonian word for wave, reached by a route with nothing whatever to do with English lanes. Three histories, one spelling.
Meaningscholars disagree
'lane, narrow path' by the English road; 'wave' by the Estonian one
Three readings sit behind the same spelling. As a respelling of the English surname Lane it goes back to Old English lanu, a narrow way between hedges or houses. As a clipped form of Elaine it inherits that name's own unsettled origins, back through Helen. And in Estonian, Laine is an independent given name from the ordinary word for a wave. None of these cancels the others out; which one applies depends on the family.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Laine went to 147 girls in 2025, but Layne, Lainee and Laynee are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 553, which makes it the 488th most-given girls’ name of the year — 970 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,906 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,934 for Laine itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Karole test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Laine's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karole climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Karole's path sketches the road Laine is walking now.
Laine is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Reads at first glance: one syllable built on a word every English speaker already knows how to say aloud.
- A long, steady presence in American records rather than one fashionable burst — it has never fully gone away.
- Comes with a ready longer form, Elaine, and a ready informal one, Lainey, without any effort from the parents.
- Short enough to carry a long surname or a long middle name without the whole thing turning into a mouthful.
- The identical spelling is an established given name in Estonia, so it travels further than it looks.
- Expect the spelling to be repeated often. Lane and Layne are both familiar, so the default guess on a form or in an email will frequently be one of those rather than Laine.
- Lane and Layne are given mainly to boys in the United States, while Laine is recorded here for girls. On paper, before anyone meets her, the name can be read either way.
- She will very likely be the only Laine anyone she knows has met — no shared name in the class, but also no last-initial required.
- At one syllable it needs a middle name with some length to it, or the full name can go by faster than intended.
