The story of Louann
The Protoevangelium of James was written around the middle of the second century and tells the story of Mary's birth and childhood. It supplies her parents, Joachim and Anne, their long childlessness, the annunciation to Anne, and Mary's presentation in the Temple. The church never included it in the canon, and Jerome disliked it, but its content passed into the liturgical calendar, into the visual arts, and into naming. The feast of Saints Joachim and Anne is kept in July, the Nativity of Mary in September, and Anne became one of the most used women's names in Europe, giving Anna, Annette, Nancy, Hannah, Ana, Anica and Anouk. So a rejected book supplied a saint, two feasts, a large part of medieval art, and a name borne by tens of millions of people.
Meaning
Hebrew channah, favor or grace
Louann joins Lou, from Louise and ultimately from Frankish Chlodovech, to Ann, from Hebrew channah, favor or grace, the name of Samuel's mother in the Bible. The name Anne as the Virgin's mother comes from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James rather than from any canonical book. The peak is 1953.
