Where it comes from

Our story of Khamani

Swahili entered American naming deliberately and at a datable moment. From the late 1960s, families looking for names outside the European stock turned to East Africa, and Swahili was the language most available in print — Nia, Imani, Amani, Zuri, Jamila, Kwame, Ayanna. Kwanzaa, first celebrated in 1966, put seven Swahili words in front of a national audience every December. What followed over the next thirty years was not only adoption but elaboration: the words were taken as raw material and prefixes and spellings were applied to them, exactly as American naming does with every source it uses. Khamani is a late product of that process. Its Swahili half is real; its kh is a visual choice made in an English-speaking country; and its 2004 peak sits three decades downstream of the original borrowing.

Peace, if from the Swahili Amani

Swahili amani means peace and comes from Arabic amān, safety or security; that reading is settled for Amani. Khamani is not a Swahili word and does not follow Swahili spelling. It appears in American records alongside Kamani, Kymani and Kamari, and the Ky-Mani of the Jamaican musician Ky-Mani Marley, born in 1976, is a separate documented formation. Which of these produced Khamani is not recoverable.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Khamani went to 17 boys in 2025, but Kamani is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 52, which makes it the 876th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,523 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 32,848 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,475 for Khamani itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mani works as a short form and stands on its own.
  • The vowels are open and the name is easy to say once heard.
  • The Swahili word behind half of it has a settled and good meaning.
What to consider
  • Nobody will spell it correctly from hearing it.
  • The kh suggests an origin the name does not have.
  • Kamani, Khamani, Kymani and Kamari are four spellings of nearly one sound.
