Kenith
Masculine · “born of fire”
Kenith is a phonetic spelling of Kenneth, and Kenneth is one of a very small number of Gaelic names that English took whole rather than translating or replacing. Most Gaelic names arriving in English were converted into whatever English name sounded nearest. This one was carried across intact, which is why it still looks and sounds Scottish a thousand years later.

The story of Kenith
The man traditionally called the first king of Scots almost certainly was not. Cinaed mac Ailpin ruled in the ninth century and later chroniclers made him the founder of the kingdom, the man who united Picts and Scots and set the shape of everything afterwards. Modern historians are much less sure. The union was probably slower, the Pictish kingdom probably absorbed rather than conquered, and the dramatic version of the story appears in sources written centuries later by people with reasons to want a founder. What is certain is that his name became a royal one and then an ordinary Scottish one, and that English speakers borrowed it directly rather than reaching for a substitute, which is unusual. Almost every other Gaelic name that crossed into English was swapped for something that sounded vaguely similar and had a Latin pedigree.
Meaningscholars disagree
born of fire, or handsome
The name in English represents two separate Gaelic names that were treated as one, and each has its own reading: one is usually taken as born of fire, the other as comely or handsome. Since English collapsed them, any modern Kenneth or Kenith inherits both readings and neither exclusively. That is an honest answer rather than an evasion, and it is more than can be said for most names of comparable age.

Fashion outlook
Kenith sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar, so nobody will need it repeated.
- Ken is available from the first day and is about as unremarkable as a name can be.
- It carries a genuine Gaelic history rather than an invented Celtic one.
- Kenneth is the spelling in every reference book, and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
- The name is firmly of a mid-century generation and has not begun to come back.
- The meaning is doubled rather than settled, because English merged two names into one.
