The story of Kelly
The Ó Ceallaigh families were prominent across medieval Ireland, and emigration made Kelly one of the commonest Irish surnames in America. Irish surnames became American given names in quantity in the twentieth century — Ryan, Casey, Riley, Kelly — for boys first. Masculine Kelly peaked in the mid-1960s, just as the feminine use overtook it, and it has been read as a girls' name since.
