The story of Brighton

Brighthelmstone was a fishing village until Dr Richard Russell prescribed seawater in 1750 and the Prince Regent built the Royal Pavilion from 1787; the railway finished the job. The name shortened to Brighton in 1810. It entered American given-name use in the 2000s and appears in the registers in current use.

From the Old English personal name Beorhthelm — beorht, 'bright', and helm, 'helmet' — and tun, 'settlement'. Domesday records it as Bristelmestune. The modern spelling is a nineteenth-century shortening. Both elements are ordinary and the reading is documented.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The bright-helmet personal name behind it is transparent and genuinely Anglo-Saxon.
  • The village-to-resort history is a good and well-documented story.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • The English town association is strong for British readers.
  • It is thoroughly unisex in American use.
  • The silent gh will need explaining.
