The story of Markeith
The Picts held most of Scotland north of the Forth until the ninth century and left almost no language behind. What survives is a list of kings, some place-name elements, a set of carved symbol stones whose meaning is disputed, and a few ogham inscriptions that resist translation. Scholars now generally class Pictish as a Brittonic language related to Welsh rather than as a linguistic isolate, but the evidence is thin enough that the argument continues. Keith, a district in Banffshire and one of the great Scottish surnames, appears to contain a word for a wood cognate with Welsh coed. Markeith attaches an American prefix to it, and the layers on the two halves are about fifteen hundred years apart.

Pictish, a wood
Markeith joins the Mar- prefix to Keith, a Scottish place name and surname generally derived from a Pictish or Brittonic word for a wood. The Pictish language is very poorly attested and the derivation is probable rather than proved. The peak is 1989.

Line the two peaks up, and Lemar's path sketches the road Markeith is walking now.
Markeith sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
