Where it comes from

Our story of Kamani

Ours, offered as ours. The Hawaiian kamani is worth knowing about even if it is not the source: a broad shore tree that Polynesian voyagers carried with them across the Pacific because its timber made bowls and its oil made medicine — a plant that traveled by canoe. Whether any American family had it in mind is unrecorded. What is certain is that the name has the open-vowel shape that both Polynesian and modern American naming favor, which is why it can be read as either.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no single source. Hawaiian kamani is a large coastal tree valued for its timber and oil. Swahili and Indian usages exist independently. In American records the name most often belongs to the Ka- and -ani families that produced Kamari, Amari and Jamani in the same decades.

Kamani sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 41 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kamani went to 35 boys in 2025, but Khamani is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 52, which makes it the 876th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,438 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 32,848 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 48,802 for Kamani itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kam and Mani are both usable short forms with their own lives.
  • Open vowels throughout make it easy in a great many languages.
  • It works for a boy or a girl, which is useful before a birth.
What to consider
  • Kamari, Kamani and Kamare are all close and get confused.
  • Being used for both sexes means forms and teachers will sometimes guess wrong.
  • There is no single meaning, so the honest answer names several traditions.
