The story of Mathis
Mattityahu gave Greek two names that Europe has treated as distinct ever since — Matthew the evangelist and Matthias the apostle chosen to replace Judas. German and French speakers made Mathis of the second, and it became a common surname in the Rhineland and in Alsace. It reached American records with German emigration in the nineteenth century and has come back into use in France in recent decades as a first name in its own right.
