Where it comes from

The story of Caio

Republican Rome used about seventeen first names in all, and Gaius was the most common of them — abbreviated C. in inscriptions, which preserves the older spelling before the letter G was invented. Portuguese made Caio and Italian made Caio and Gaio. The name has been widely used in Brazil in recent decades. Welsh also has a Caio, a place name in Carmarthenshire, which is unconnected.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Gaius is among the oldest Roman first names and its origin is not established. A connection to a verb meaning to rejoice was offered in antiquity and is doubted; an Etruscan source has also been proposed. The name is certainly very old and certainly unexplained.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One of the oldest documented Roman first names, in continuous written record for over two thousand years.
  • Four letters, quick to write and easy to say.
  • Very widely used in Brazil, so it has a large community behind it.
What to consider
  • The Portuguese, Italian and English pronunciations all differ.
  • The meaning is genuinely unknown, which is unusual for a name this old and this well recorded.
  • Cayo, Caio and Kaio all appear and none is standard in English.
