The story of Rainier
Raginhari was a continental Germanic name that French made Rainier and English made Rayner. It has been carried by counts of Monaco for centuries, most visibly in the twentieth. Separately, an eighteenth-century British admiral named Rainier gave his surname to the great volcano south of Seattle, which is why the name is familiar to Americans who have never met a Monegasque. Both associations follow the name in American use.

About 1 boy in 42,702 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 48,802 for Rainier itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Julion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rainier's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Julion climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Julion's path sketches the road Rainier is walking now.
Rainier sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Rainier is headed
Rainier should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- A settled Germanic meaning with a documented record going back over a thousand years.
- Rain and Ray are both plain short forms available immediately.
- It works in French, German and Italian with only small changes.
- The mountain is the first association for most Americans, and it is said differently.
- Rainier, Rainer and Ranier all appear and the spelling will be asked for.
- The stress is unsettled between the French and American readings.
