The story of Kevion
Kevin's modern career is unusual for the range of places it went. It was a mainly Irish name until the twentieth century, then spread through the English-speaking world, and then — remarkably — became one of the most popular boys' names in France in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and in Germany after that. In both countries it subsequently acquired a strong class association and became a target of jokes, to the point where French and German sociologists have studied the effect as a case of a name functioning as a social marker. That is a documented instance of a name's reputation changing in one country while remaining neutral in another. Kevion, the American extension, peaks in 2001.
Meaning
Irish "gentle, precious", with a diminutive
Kevin is the anglicization of Caoimhín, from caomh, gentle, kind or precious, with the diminutive ending -ín — so the name means something like little gentle one. Caoimhe, anglicized Keeva, is the feminine of the same word. Kevion is a modern American formation on Kev- with the -ion ending, and the compound has no separate documented meaning.

The Efraim test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kevion's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Efraim climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Efraim's path sketches the road Kevion is walking now.
