Kennya
Feminine · “mountain of whiteness”
Kennya is the country with an extra n. Kenya took its name from the mountain at its center, and the mountain's name is older than any of the European maps — the Kikuyu call it Kirinyaga and the Kamba something close to Kiinyaa, and the European spelling is an attempt at one of those heard imperfectly. The doubled n here separates the name from the nation on paper, and nowhere else.

The story of Kennya
Kenya became a name for American girls in the second half of the twentieth century, part of a broader turn toward African place names — Kenya, Asia, Sahara, Zaire — used as given names in the same way that Ireland, Dakota and India had long been used. It is a genuine tradition rather than an improvisation: naming a child after a country is something English speakers have done for centuries, and the choice of continent changed rather than the practice. The doubled n came later and does what doubled letters usually do in American spelling, which is to mark a family's version as its own without altering the sound.

mountain of whiteness
The readings that survive point at the snow on an equatorial peak: Kirinyaga in Kikuyu is generally read as the mountain of brightness or of whiteness, and the Kamba form is understood similarly. Nineteenth-century European travelers wrote down a version of one of these, and Kenya is what the spelling settled into. Which language the recorded form actually came from is argued. The mountain named the colony and the colony named the country, so the whole chain runs from a single peak.

Pronouncing Kennya
KEN-yuh
KEN-yuh, two syllables, stress at the front — the American way of saying the country. British English long preferred KEEN-yuh, and Kenyans themselves say KEN-yuh, so the shorter first vowel is both the local and the American reading.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kennya went to 5 girls in 2025, but Kenia, Kenya and Keniyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 285, which makes it the 682nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,260 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 5,640 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Kennya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Tansy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kennya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tansy climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tansy's path sketches the road Kennya is walking now.
Kennya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Everyone knows the word, so the name is never mispronounced or puzzled over.
- Nya works as a short form and is a complete name of its own.
- It names a real place with a documented history rather than an invented one.
- The doubled n is silent and will be dropped by nearly everyone writing the name from memory.
- A country name carries the country with it, including whatever is in the news, and that is outside anyone's control.
- It reads as a place first and a person second, which is a small distance the name never fully closes.
