Kenya is a mountain. The country takes its name from the peak at its center, and the peak's name comes from Kikuyu and Kamba words that describe it — a mountain of brightness, of ostrich feathers, of black and white, depending on which language and which explanation. Kenia is the Spanish spelling, and it has been a girls' name across Latin America for decades.

Where it comes from

The story of Kennia

Kenya became independent in 1963 and took the mountain's name for the whole country. Almost immediately the word began appearing as a girls' name — in the United States, where African place names were being taken up deliberately, and separately across Latin America, where Kenia became a genuinely common name with no particular connection to Africa at all. That second stream is the larger one behind this spelling: the record shows it concentrated in California and Texas, and the doubled n is a Spanish-American touch rather than an African one.

from Mount Kenya

The mountain's name is recorded in Kikuyu as Kirinyaga and in Kamba as Kiinyaa, and European explorers wrote down something in between, which became Kenya. What the original means is argued: the readings include mountain of brightness and mountain of the ostrich, the second because the snow and rock look like the bird's black and white feathers. The country was named for the mountain, and the name for the country came later.

Kennia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kennia went to 6 girls in 2025, but Kenia, Kenya and Keniyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 285, which makes it the 682nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,526 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,640 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Kennia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone can say it, because everyone has seen the country's name in print.
  • Nia works as a short form and is a real name in two unrelated languages.
  • Six letters, two syllables, and no sound English lacks.
  • It names a real place with a documented and genuinely interesting etymology.
What to consider
  • Kenia is the standard Spanish spelling and will be written instead.
  • It is a country's name, and a child with no connection to it will occasionally be asked about that.
  • Kenya, Kenia and Kennya all appear in records, so the spelling has to be given.
