Keniya
Feminine
Kenya is named after a mountain, and the mountain is named for the way its snow looks. The Kamba and Kikuyu names describe black rock streaked with white, which is what an ostrich looks like — and a German missionary wrote down what he heard in 1849, which is why the spelling is what it is.

The story of Keniya
Ludwig Krapf was the first European to record the mountain, and he wrote down the Kamba name as he heard it, which is how Kiinyaa became Kenia and then Kenya. That single transcription determined the name of a country a century before there was one. The mountain is the second highest in Africa and the only place on the equator with permanent ice, so a snow-marked black peak sitting on the equator is a real and startling thing rather than a poetic image. As an American given name, Kenya belongs to the wave of African place names taken up deliberately from the late 1960s; Keniya is a later respelling of it.

Not established
The country is named for Mount Kenya, whose local names — Kirinyaga in Kikuyu, Kiinyaa in Kamba — are usually explained by the resemblance of the snow-streaked peak to the plumage of a male ostrich. The reading is standard and not certain. Keniya is an American respelling of the country's name.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keniya went to 7 girls in 2025, but Kenia, Kenya and Keniyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 285, which makes it the 682nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,250 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 5,640 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Keniya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rainbow test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Keniya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rainbow climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rainbow's path sketches the road Keniya is walking now.
Keniya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented origin traceable to a mountain, a language and a specific year of transcription.
- Three short forms, two of which serve either child.
- Three open syllables with nothing hard to say.
- Kenya is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected toward it.
- It is the name of a country, and that association is fixed.
- The reading behind the mountain's name is the standard one and has not been proven.
