Kenya
Feminine · “from the country”
Kenya is given to both — 25,412 girls and 2,141 boys since 1880. See Kenya as a boy nameSee other names given to both
This name arrives on American birth certificates at a very specific moment, and it is not a coincidence. A wave of African countries became independent in the early nineteen-sixties, their names were in every newspaper for the first time, and American parents began giving them to daughters. Kenya was among the first and by far the most used.

The story of Kenya
The mountain has glaciers, and it is on the equator. That combination is rare enough to have made it a scientific curiosity since Europeans first reported it and were widely disbelieved — a snow-capped peak on the equator sounded like a traveler's invention. The ice has been measured since the beginning of the twentieth century and the record is unambiguous: most of the glaciers have gone entirely, and the remainder are small enough that the mountain is expected to be ice-free within a couple of decades. A country named for a mountain named, quite possibly, for its whiteness, and the whiteness is going.

from the country, and the country from a mountain
The country takes its name from the mountain at its center, whose own name in the local languages has several proposed glosses and no settled one. The chain is clear; the last link is not.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kenya went to 71 girls in 2025, but Kenia, Keniyah and Keniya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 285, which makes it the 682nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,803 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 5,640 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 22,638 for Kenya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Oma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kenya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oma climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oma's path sketches the road Kenya is walking now.
Kenya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, easy and recognized instantly everywhere.
- The spelling is unambiguous and never needs repeating.
- It carries a real place with a real history rather than an invented origin.
- It is a country's name, which is a large thing to carry and always noticed.
- It is closely tied to the decades of its American rise.
- The record holds a few boys as well, and the boy is much the smaller side.
