Keiana sits where three different naming traditions happen to overlap. Hawaiian has Kiana, which is how the islands write Diana. Persian has Kiana, an old name pointing back to a legendary dynasty of kings. And American naming has the Ki- and Kei- fronts, which combine with -ana without reference to either. All three produce almost the same spelling.

Where it comes from

The story of Keiana

Hawaiian naming took in a large number of English and biblical names during the nineteenth century and reshaped every one of them to fit a sound system with far fewer consonants, producing a whole family of names that look invented and are in fact carefully translated. Kiana is one of those. Persian naming, meanwhile, had its own Kiana from the Shahnameh tradition, entirely independently. Both reached American records in the twentieth century, and both landed among a set of American coinages built from the same syllables. The extra e in Keiana belongs to the American layer, and it is the part of the spelling with no history behind it.

Meaningscholars disagree

divine; or royal, on the Persian reading

Hawaiian has no d and no r, so borrowed names are rebuilt with the sounds the language has — Diana becomes Kiana, David becomes Kawika, and the meaning comes along with the original. On that road the name means what Diana means. The Persian Kiana belongs to the Kayanian kings of the old epics and is read as royal or of the Kianis. The American road has no meaning at all. Which of the three applies is a family fact rather than a linguistic one.

Pronouncing Keiana

kee-AH-nuh

kee-AH-nuh, three syllables, stress in the middle. The competing reading, kay-AH-nuh, follows the ei the way English usually does and is heard often. Hawaiian gives every vowel its full value, kee-AH-nah, which is close to the first reading and cleaner than either.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keiana went to 5 girls in 2025, but Keyana and Keyanna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 42, which makes it the 918th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,024 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 38,268 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Keiana itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has two real linguistic parents available, and both of them have documented meanings.
  • Ana is waiting inside it as a short form that works in a dozen languages.
  • Three open syllables sit well against almost any surname.
What to consider
  • The ei can be read two ways and both are natural in English, so the name will be said wrong regularly.
  • Kiana is the far more common spelling and the extra e will be dropped by most people writing from memory.
  • The three possible origins point in genuinely different directions, so any story a family tells is a choice among them.
