Where it comes from

The story of Kashmir

Kashmir sits between the Himalaya and the Pir Panjal and has been contested between India, Pakistan and China since 1947; before that it was famous in Europe chiefly for shawls. The name entered English twice, once as a place and once as a fabric, and the two spellings diverged. Its use as an American given name is small and belongs mostly to the period after 1975, when a widely played rock song fixed the word in the popular ear for a generation. Kashmir's best year on file is 1991, and both spellings appear in American records, with this one closer to the map.

Meaningnot established

of Kashmir

Kashmir's own name has no settled derivation. Sanskrit sources connect it to the sage Kashyapa, and other readings have been proposed from local languages; none is established. This spelling is the map spelling of the region, distinct from the English trade word cashmere that names the wool, which is the same place name reshaped for commerce in the eighteenth century.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real place with a strong and specific set of images behind it.
  • Kash is short, current and works entirely on its own.
  • The map spelling is the more serious of the two available.
What to consider
  • Kashmir is a disputed territory and the name carries that context.
  • Cashmere is the more common spelling in American given-name records.
  • The rock song is the first association for a great many adults.
