Where it comes from

The story of Kambry

Cymry comes from a Brittonic compound meaning people of the same region, and it was adopted as a self-description by the Britons of what is now Wales and the north-west of England as they were separated from each other by Anglo-Saxon expansion. Cymru is the country and Cymraeg the language. The English name comes from the other direction: Germanic walh meant a Roman or Celtic speaker, a foreigner, and it gave Welsh, Wales, Cornwall and Wallonia, as well as the surnames Walsh and Wallace. Cambria is a medieval Latinization of Cymru, used in academic and poetic writing and revived in the nineteenth century, which is where the geological Cambrian period gets its name, from the Welsh rocks in which the fossils were first studied.

Welsh Cymry, fellow countrymen

Kambry is an American respelling of Cambry or Cambria, the Latinized form of Welsh Cymru, from Cymry, compatriots, built on a Brittonic word meaning fellow countrymen. It may equally be a coinage on the Kam- and -bry elements with no source. The peak is 2014.

Kambry sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2014, with 41 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kambry went to 10 girls in 2025, but Cambri, Kambri and Cambry are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 127, which makes it the 833rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,624 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,656 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Kambry itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kam and Bry are both usable short forms.
  • Two syllables with a firm first-syllable stress.
  • The pronunciation is obvious from the spelling.
What to consider
  • Cambria and Cambry are both closer to the source.
  • The K spelling reads as a modern respelling.
  • The 2014 peak makes it very recent.
