The story of Kamber
Qanbar ibn Kadan was a freedman of Ali ibn Abi Talib and is remembered in Shia and especially Alevi tradition as a devoted servant who stayed with his master through everything and was executed years later for refusing to disown him. In Alevi ritual the figure of Kamber has a formal place, and the name is carried widely in Anatolia and the Balkans. The story matters in that tradition because it is about loyalty from below rather than authority from above, and because Qanbar was a freed slave, which the sources are explicit about. In Turkish the phrase Ali'nin Kamberi, Ali's Kamber, is proverbial for an inseparable companion. None of this reaches the American name, which arrived from a different direction entirely, but the collision is exact.
