Where it comes from

The story of Camber

Cambering a road is old engineering. Roman roads were built with a pronounced convex surface so that rainwater ran to the ditches on either side rather than standing on the surface and destroying it, and the technique was rediscovered and formalized in the eighteenth century by Telford and McAdam. The same idea reappears wherever a curve does work. An aerofoil's camber, the asymmetry between its upper and lower surfaces, is what generates most of its lift at low speed. A wheel's camber angle, the few degrees by which it leans in or out from vertical, determines how much rubber meets the road when a car corners. A beam is cambered upward before loading so that it settles level. In every case the word names a curve introduced to solve a problem that a flat surface would create.

Meaning

Latin camurus, curved

Camber comes through Old French cambre from Latin camurus, curved or crooked. In English it names a slight convex curve, particularly the cross-slope of a road, the curvature of an aerofoil and the tilt of a wheel. Camber is also a place in East Sussex. The American peak of the given name is 1986.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Camber went to 10 girls in 2025, but Kamber is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 940th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,517 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 80,363 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Camber itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
