Blend naming is one of the oldest American habits and one of the least documented, because the evidence is inside families rather than in registries. A daughter named for a Karen and a Lynn, or a Kay and a Marilyn, produces a name that no reference work lists and that the family can explain in one sentence. What makes the practice invisible in the data is that the results look identical to prefix-plus-suffix coinages: Kalynn from Kay and Lynn is indistinguishable on paper from Kalynn built out of the Ka- and -lynn parts bin. The difference is entirely in the intention, and it matters, because one of those names has two people behind it and the other has none. Kalynn peaked in 1995, when both practices were at full strength.
