Kalyn
Feminine
Kalyn is given to both — 7,412 girls and 381 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Kalyn stood inside the American top six hundred and twenty-eight in 1994, which makes it one of the more successful of the many Ka- plus -lyn combinations of that era. Both halves were among the most productive naming elements of the late twentieth century, and joining them produced a name that sounded current without belonging to anyone.

Our story of Kalyn
The Ka- front and the -lyn ending peaked at the same moment, and the arithmetic of that is worth seeing. Between about 1985 and 2000 the American girls' top thousand contained Kaitlyn, Katelyn, Kaylyn, Kalyn, Kaylin, Katelynn, Kaitlynn, Kaylynn and a dozen more — the same two elements combined and respelled in every available way. What made that possible was that neither element was tied to a source: a family choosing Kalyn was not choosing between Catherine and something else, they were choosing a sound and then a spelling. The result was a decade in which a very large number of American girls received names that sounded almost identical and were written almost never the same way twice. It is the clearest single demonstration in the record of what happens when naming decouples entirely from inheritance.

Not established
No documented source. The Ka- front is a productive American naming element with no lexical content. The -lyn ending descends by sound from Welsh llyn, 'lake', through the place name and the mid-century name Lynn, and carries nothing in this position. The name may also be read as a respelling of Kaitlyn or Caitlin, which descends from Catherine and has its own contested etymology, but that route cannot be shown.

KAY-lin
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the ending reduced. A second saying, KAL-in with the short a of pal, is also produced by readers seeing the spelling cold, since a single a between consonants is usually short in English.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kalyn went to 19 girls in 2025, but Callyn, Kallyn and Kalynn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 97, which makes it the 863rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,253 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 16,570 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Kalyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Siobhan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kalyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Siobhan climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Siobhan's path sketches the road Kalyn is walking now.
Kalyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
