Welsh has a sound English cannot make. The double l in llyn, a lake, is made by putting the tongue where an l goes and pushing air round the side of it, and English speakers who try it produce a th, a cl or a straight l. Lynn is that word with the difficult part removed.

Where it comes from

The story of Calynn

The Welsh sound is written ll and linguists call it a voiceless lateral fricative, which is a precise way of saying that English does not have it. It is all over the map of Wales — Llandudno, Llanelli, Llangollen — and it is the single reason English speakers cannot say Welsh place names. Llyn is a lake, and it turns up in Welsh place names and then in English surnames, worn down to Lynn along the way with the difficult consonant flattened to an ordinary l. From there it became a woman's name, then an ending that could be attached to anything, which is where Calynn, Jaelyn, Katelyn and Braelyn come from.

lake, at one remove

The -lynn ending comes from Lynn, which is Welsh llyn, a lake, taken through English place names and surnames — or from a clip of Linda. The Cal- opening has no established source; it is a syllable used freely in American naming. The compound has no meaning of its own.

Calynn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Calynn went to 7 girls in 2025, but Callyn, Kalyn and Kallyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 97, which makes it the 863rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,069 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 16,570 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Calynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables that nobody has to be taught.
  • Cal and Lynn both work as short forms and both serve either child.
  • The ending has a genuine Welsh word behind it, which most free-floating suffixes do not.
What to consider
  • The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
  • Kaelyn, Caelyn and Calin are all in use, so it will be spelled out every time.
  • The compound has no meaning; only its ending does, and at a considerable distance.
