The story of Justen
The ius and lex distinction runs through Roman legal thought and into every European legal system. Ius is the underlying right or the body of law as a principle — ius civile, ius gentium, and the modern phrase ius soli, the right of the soil, meaning citizenship by birthplace. Lex is a specific enacted statute. Languages descending from Latin kept both: French droit and loi, Spanish derecho and ley, Italian diritto and legge. English, having borrowed from Latin and French at different moments, has right and law from Germanic sources and the whole Latin vocabulary sitting on top of them. Justen peaks in America in 1988.
Meaning
Latin "just, righteous"
From Iustinus, a derivative of iustus, just or upright, from ius, right or law. Justin was borne by two early Christian apologists and by two Byzantine emperors, including Justin I, uncle of Justinian, whose legal codification gave European law its foundation. Justen is an American respelling; the unstressed final vowel is a schwa and carries no information.
