The story of Jolynn
American naming spent the first half of the twentieth century shortening women's names to monosyllables and registering them, giving Jo, Kay, Jan, Bea, Sue and Di as legal names rather than nicknames. It then spent the second half putting syllables back, and the -lynn suffix was the tool: Jolynn, Kaylynn, Sulynn, Marilyn. The two movements are opposite and were running at the same time, sometimes in the same families. Jolynn's best year in United States records is 1962, right at the pivot, and it is one of the clearest single examples of the whole pattern.

Jo shortens more than one name. From Joanna and Johanna the source is Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious; from Josephine it is Yosef, God will add. Both are settled meanings for the parent names, and Jo carries whichever the family intended. The -lynn ending derives from Lynn, from a Welsh and English word for a pool, and carries no meaning.
