Where it comes from

The story of Jeron

Jerome spent more than thirty years in Bethlehem producing the Latin Bible that became the Vulgate, and his decisions still shape how the text is read in the West. He translated the Old Testament from Hebrew rather than from the Greek Septuagint, against the advice of Augustine among others, and he grouped the books that survived only in Greek separately, which is the origin of the Catholic and Protestant disagreement about the Apocrypha. He was also famously irritable in correspondence. The Dutch form Jeroen is best known through Jeroen Bosch, the painter usually called Hieronymus Bosch in English, whose name in his own town was the short one. That a name meaning sacred name should attach to a translator is a coincidence, but it is the kind that gets remembered.

Greek hieros and onoma, sacred name

Jeron is most likely an American respelling of Dutch Jeroen, itself from Greek Hieronymos, sacred name, the name English calls Jerome. It may equally be a coined name built on the American prefix Je- and the -ron ending seen in Deron and Tyron. The 1981 peak sits in the middle of the coinage era, so both remain possible for any given bearer.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jeron went to 8 boys in 2025, but Jerron is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 14, which makes it the 914th most-given boys’ name of the year — 7,996 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 122,005 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 213,510 for Jeron itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
