Where it comes from

The story of Ciro

Cyrus the Great founded the Persian empire in the sixth century BC and, on taking Babylon, permitted the deported Judaeans to return and rebuild — for which the book of Isaiah calls him God's anointed, a term used of no other foreign ruler. The Greeks wrote a great deal about him and the name entered European use through them. Italian took it as Ciro and Spanish as Ciro too, and it has been an ordinary name in southern Italy for centuries, particularly around Naples. Its American record follows Italian emigration.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Old Persian Kurush has no settled derivation. A reading as 'young' has been offered, and so has an Elamite source, which would put the name outside Persian entirely; a folk etymology from a Persian word for the sun circulated in antiquity. Greek wrote it Kyros, which happens to resemble their own word for lord, and that coincidence has confused the picture ever since. Nothing is established.

CHEE-roh

Two syllables, stress on the first. Italian ci- before an i or an e is a ch sound, so this is CHEE-roh, not SEE-roh. Spanish says SEE-roh, and the two languages read the same four letters differently.

Ciro sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2025, with 43 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ciro went to 43 boys in 2025, but Cyro is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 56, which makes it the 872nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,012 places above the chart.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented historical figure of the first rank standing behind it.
  • Four letters, two syllables, and short enough to carry any surname.
  • Cyrus and Kourosh both stand beside it as recognized forms elsewhere.
What to consider
  • Italian and Spanish read the c differently, so the name is said two ways.
  • English speakers will say SEE-roh or SY-roh, neither of which is the Italian saying.
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so any gloss offered for it is a guess.
