The story of Jenise
Denis was a third-century bishop sent to convert Gaul and executed on the hill north of Paris. The legend, developed centuries later, has him pick up his severed head and walk, preaching all the way, to the site where the abbey of Saint-Denis was later built, the burial church of almost every French king from the tenth century to the eighteenth. He became the patron saint of France. Montmartre, mons martyrum, the martyrs' hill, is named for the execution, though the name has also been derived from a temple of Mars. Cephalophores, head-carrying saints, are a recognized type in hagiography with dozens of examples across Europe, and art historians generally read the motif as a visual solution to the problem of showing both the martyrdom and the man.

Greek Dionysos, the god
Jenise is most likely a respelling of Denise, the French feminine of Denis, from Dionysius, belonging to Dionysus. It may equally be built on Jenny or Janice with the -ise ending. Dionysus's own name contains the element Dio-, from Zeus, and a second part that is not securely explained. The peak is 1960.

The Maryjean test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenise's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maryjean climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maryjean's path sketches the road Jenise is walking now.
