Jazzmine
Feminine · “Persian yasmin”
Jasmine is Persian, and jazz is a mystery. The flower's name traveled from yasmin through Arabic and French into English with a clear route at every step. The word the respelling borrows has no agreed origin at all, and it is one of the most argued-over etymologies in American English.

The story of Jazzmine
Jasmine's history is straightforward. Persian yasmin gave Arabic yasmin, which gave Spanish jazmin, Italian gelsomino and French jasmin, and English borrowed it in the sixteenth century. Jazz is the opposite case. It appears in American print around 1912, first in baseball writing in California and then in music, and the proposed origins are numerous and none is demonstrated: a West African word, Creole French chasser, the name Charles or Jasper, a perfume, a slang term of a sexual kind, an onomatopoeia. Serious lexicographers have been working on it since the 1930s and the honest verdict remains unknown. So a name spelled this way puts one of the best documented loanwords in English next to one of the worst documented, and the reader is unlikely to notice either.
Meaning
Persian yasmin, the jasmine flower
Jazzmine is a respelling of Jasmine, from Persian yasmin, the flower, which reached English through Arabic and French. The doubled z imports the spelling of jazz, a word whose own origin is genuinely unknown despite a century of investigation. The flower name has a clear documented route; the respelling does not. The peak of this spelling is 1993.

The Petrina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jazzmine's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Petrina climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Petrina's path sketches the road Jazzmine is walking now.
