Our story of Jayquan
Jay is unusually crowded for a three-letter name. The bird came into English from Old French geai, itself probably from a Latin personal name Gaius applied to the bird for its chattering — so the bird may be named after a man. The letter came later: J separated from I in European printing during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and once it existed it could be spelled out as a name, which is how initials became Jay. And the clipping arrived from every J name in the stock — Jacob, James, John, Jason, Jasper. All three are live in American use, and they are indistinguishable in speech. Jayquan takes the third and attaches an ending invented in the 1980s, so the name is a medieval French bird name's namesake sitting in front of a syllable that did not exist forty years ago. It peaks in 2001.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning. Jay serves as a clip of Jacob, James, Jason and John, as the name of a bird, and as the letter J spelled out. The -quan ending is a created suffix with no source language, notable because no English word ends in q followed by a vowel, so it could not have been borrowed. Jayquan has no documented reading.

The Merrell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jayquan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Merrell climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Merrell's path sketches the road Jayquan is walking now.
