The -rel ending has a history of belittling. English took it from French as a diminutive and used it to make cockerel, mongrel, scoundrel, wastrel and minstrel — a suffix that shrinks what it attaches to, and often looks down on it.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jarel

Diminutive suffixes drift toward contempt in a great many languages, and English -rel is a clear case. It began as a neutral French diminutive and produced cockerel, a young cock; mongrel, from a root meaning mixed; wastrel, one who wastes; scoundrel, of disputed origin; doggerel, bad verse; and minstrel, which started respectable and did not stay so. The pattern is not unique — Spanish -ucho and Italian -accio are openly pejorative, and English -ling does similar work in underling and hireling. What is worth noticing is that the name family ending in -rel is unaffected. Darrell, Terrell, Jarel and Merrell reach the same letters by a different route, through Norman surnames, and carry none of the suffix's baggage, because a name is not parsed the way a word is. Jarel peaks in 1988.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No inherited meaning. Ja- is a created American prefix; the -rel ending is drawn from names such as Darrell and Terrell rather than from the English suffix directly. The English -rel of cockerel and mongrel comes from Old French -erel, a double diminutive. Jarel has no documented reading, and the resemblance between the name ending and the English suffix is a coincidence of sound.

Jarel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1990, with 41 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jarel went to 10 boys in 2025, but Jarell and Jarrell are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 45, which makes it the 883rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,796 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 37,957 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Jarel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
