The story of Janiece
Janice Meredith was published in 1899 and was one of the bestselling American novels of its decade, a historical romance about a New Jersey girl during the Revolution. It was dramatized for the stage in 1900 and filmed in 1924 with Marion Davies. The name Janice is essentially absent from American records before the novel and rises steadily afterwards, peaking in the 1930s and 1940s, which is the standard slow diffusion of a name from a book rather than the sharp spike a song produces. The pattern is the same one that gave Wendy to Barrie's Peter Pan, Vanessa to Swift, Pamela to Sidney and then Richardson, and Lorna to Blackmore's Lorna Doone. Novelists who need a name that sounds plausible but belongs to nobody tend to build one out of an existing one, and if the book sells, the name outlives it.

Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious
Janiece is a respelling of Janice, which appears to have been coined by Paul Leicester Ford for his 1899 novel Janice Meredith, most likely as an extension of Jane or Janet. Those descend from Latin Johanna and Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious. The -iece spelling is an American variant that does not change the sound. The peak is 1936.

The Anise test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Janiece's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anise climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anise's path sketches the road Janiece is walking now.
