Where it comes from

Our story of Janayah

Most American coinages have two parts. A prefix and an ending, or a stem and a suffix, and that is enough: two familiar pieces produce a name that sounds inherited. Three-part names are the next generation, and they arrive later because they need all three pieces to be independently familiar first. Janayah is one: the Ja- was established by the 1970s, the -naya middle by the 1990s through Anaya and Amaya, and the -ah ending throughout. Stacking them produces a longer, more formal-sounding name from entirely modern material, and it is the same operation that produced Jamariah, Kaliyah and Deshaunda. The cost is that the pieces are shared with hundreds of neighbors, so the name is hard to hold in the memory. Janayah's best year in United States records is 2007.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No inherited etymology. The Ja- prefix, the -nay- or -naya- middle and the -ah ending are all free elements in American naming. The name resembles the Hebrew Yanay and the Arabic Janah, but neither is its source, and glosses offered from those languages are retrofits to the finished spelling.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janayah went to 17 girls in 2025, but Janaya and Janaiah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 93, which makes it the 867th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,679 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 17,282 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Janayah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
