The story of Jamelle
The -elle ending is the French feminine of -el, and English absorbed it in Michelle, Danielle, Gabrielle, Isabelle and Estelle, all of which arrived as French women's names. From there it detached and became a shape available to anyone, which is how Jamelle, Rochelle, Chanelle and Shanelle were built. The same thing has happened to other bits of French orthography in American naming: the -eau of Deveraux, the accent that is written and never pronounced, the qu of Marquise, the -ette of Jeanette. What is being borrowed is not the language, since almost nobody involved speaks it, but the visual association with elegance that French spelling carries in English-speaking countries, an association that dates back to the Norman Conquest and has never entirely gone away.

Arabic jamil, beautiful
Jamelle is most likely built on Jamal or Jamil, Arabic for beauty and beautiful, with the French -elle ending. In French that ending is feminine, which is why the same spelling is given to women; in this family it is used for men. The record does not separate the two. The peak is 1987.

The Larrie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jamelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Larrie climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Larrie's path sketches the road Jamelle is walking now.

The trade-off
- The stressed ending gives it a firm final beat.
- Seven letters and two syllables, easy to say.
- The Arabic element behind it has a clear meaning.
- The -elle ending is feminine in French.
- Jamel and Jamal are both commoner.
- The 1987 peak dates it to a narrow window.
