The story of Larrie
Lawrence was the deacon in charge of the Roman church's money, and when the prefect demanded that he hand over its treasures he asked for three days, spent them distributing everything to the poor, and then presented the poor themselves as the treasure. The response was not gentle. Centuries later a French explorer sailed into a great gulf in North America on the saint's feast day and named it for him, and the name stuck to the gulf, the river, the seaway and half the towns along them — so that the largest waterway in eastern North America is named for a third-century Roman administrator who gave away the petty cash.
Meaning
From Laurentum, a town on the Italian coast
Laurence means a man from Laurentum, and the town's own name may have had something to do with laurels — so the laurel connection everybody assumes is real but two steps away, arriving through a place rather than directly. The short form carries the same distance with it.

Larrie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
