Jaleigh

Our story of Jaleigh
English spelling froze around 1500 and the pronunciation kept moving, which is why one letter sequence can now represent several unrelated sounds. The gh in eigh was once a real consonant, a scrape at the back of the throat that English lost, and the vowels around it went in different directions in different words. What survives is a spelling that gives no reliable instruction: a reader meeting an unfamiliar name in -eigh has to guess. The -eigh names of the last thirty years, Kayleigh, Haleigh, Ryleigh, Jaleigh, all inherit that ambiguity, and they resolve it only because the reader already knows the sound from a more common relative. Jaleigh's best year in United States records is 2009.

Not established
No inherited etymology. The Ja- opening is a free American syllable. The -leigh ending derives from Leigh, the modern English spelling of Old English leah, a woodland clearing, but it is used here purely as a sound and there is no clearing behind it. Glosses offered for the whole are retrofits.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The -eigh is a plain -ee here, following Leigh; it never rhymes with weigh despite looking as though it should.

The Lavanda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaleigh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lavanda climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lavanda's path sketches the road Jaleigh is walking now.
Jaleigh sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
