Our story of Jalan
The choice made at the Youth Pledge of 1928 was deliberate and unusual. Javanese had far more speakers, but choosing it would have handed one ethnic group linguistic dominance over an archipelago of hundreds of languages. Malay, already the trade lingua franca of the region and nobody's ethnic property in most of the islands, was chosen instead and renamed Bahasa Indonesia. It has since become the national language of a country of 280 million, learned in school by almost everyone and spoken natively by a minority — a working example of a national language built by decision rather than inheritance. The word jalan, road, is one of its most visible: every Indonesian street sign begins with it. The American name Jalan, peaking in 2000, has nothing to do with any of that, and both facts are worth having.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning. Ja- is a created American prefix and -lan an ending in the same family as Jalen, Jaylen and Jalon. Separately, Indonesian and Malay jalan means a road or street and appears at the start of nearly every Indonesian address; the resemblance to the American name is a coincidence, and no connection is documented.

The Arash test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jalan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arash climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arash's path sketches the road Jalan is walking now.
Jalan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
