Jaidah
Feminine · “jade”
Jaidah is Jada with an i inserted and an h added, and both additions are silent. Underneath is jade, and jade has one of the odder etymologies in English: the stone is named after a part of the body it was believed to cure. Spanish speakers in the Americas called it piedra de la ijada, the stone of the flank, and the second word became the whole name.

The story of Jaidah
Jade arrived in English as a mineral and became a name the way Ruby, Pearl and Opal did, by way of the same American habit of naming daughters after valuable things. Jada is the elaborated form, and it spread widely in the nineteen-nineties. What happened next is characteristic of that decade: the base name was rewritten in every direction at once — Jaida, Jayda, Jaeda, Jaidah — with letters added that make no sound and change nothing about how the name is said. The final h in particular is borrowed from the Hebrew names that legitimately carry one. None of this is arbitrary exactly; it is a system, and Jaidah is a fully regular product of it.

jade, the green stone
The stone road is clear: Spanish colonists in Mesoamerica called the green stone piedra de la ijada, the flank stone, because it was worn as a remedy for kidney complaints; French clipped it to le jade and English took that. But Jada is also a name in its own right in the Hebrew Bible, borne by a man in the genealogies of Chronicles, and it has been read as an unrelated Arabic name meaning generous. Whether a given Jaidah descends from the stone, from either of those, or from none of them cannot be recovered from the spelling.

Pronouncing Jaidah
JAY-duh
JAY-duh, two syllables, stress at the front. The i and the h are both silent, so this spelling is said exactly like Jada. Some families say jah-EE-dah, treating the i as its own syllable, and the spelling permits it, but it is the less common reading.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaidah went to 5 girls in 2025, but Jayda, Jaida and Jaydah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 247, which makes it the 715th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,227 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 6,507 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Jaidah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Druscilla test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaidah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Druscilla climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Druscilla's path sketches the road Jaidah is walking now.
Jaidah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The sound is familiar and effortless, and no English speaker will hesitate over it.
- Jade sits inside it as a short form that is already a standing name.
- The green stone gives the name something concrete behind it, which pure coinages do not have.
- Both added letters are silent, so the spelling has to be dictated every time and will still come back as Jada.
- There are at least five spellings of this sound in common use, and none of them is the default.
- The pronunciation is not fully settled — two or three syllables are both defensible from the spelling — so the family will have to establish it and keep establishing it.
